In the 1850's, advances in photographic development technology led to the development of Carte de Visit, or CDV, photographs. The new pictures were small, relatively inexpensive, and could be sent through the mail when mounted on heavy paperboard. From 1864 through 1866, the US government taxed CDV photos, and CDV's with a tax revenue stamp are particularly prized by collectors today. You can learn more about CDV history here.
